Three Storey Residence in Glyfada, Attica

The house is located in a privileged area, in a 580 m2 plot, facing the undeveloped area of the old airport.

The increased needs of the big family and the unique characteristics of the area formed the building program which led, the architects, to design and create a multilevel residence.

The main under study issues were:

  • The monolithic result, created by the height of the house, which led to the management of the scale of the building.
  • Pursuit moderation and balance in a region that seeks them.
  • The possibility for using in everyday life open and semi-open spaces, in the conditions of urban scarcity.

The differentiation of the alignments of the axis, is the main design choice, in order to ‘’play‘’ with the volume of the building, which otherwise would seem robust and stiff.

The transparency of everyday living spaces ensures the maximum contact of closed – open, inside – outside space. Playing with the volume of the building, the complete surface of the overlying floors seems to be levitating. In the inside, the organization of spaces does not deviate from the logic of measure and ergonomics. The everyday life of the family led to the organization of space. Their activities were analyzed and they dictated the development of the sections.

The third floor was added in the second phase of the construction, after the restrictions of the maximum building height were lifted. Beyond the need for an office, this extra space was design as an observatory from where the view is infinite in every direction.

The differentiation of the usual application of the plaster and the different styles in the application materials and colors, were the main tools in shaping the volume of the building with the different surfaces.
